A lo largo de su carrera Vincent van Gogh hizo muchos retratos. En muchas ocasiones manifestó sus deseos de tener modelos para poder retratarlos. En esta ocasión pintó a una joven campesina sobre un fondo de espigas de trigo. En una carta a su amigo Gauguin le manifiesta su deseo de hacer retratos con ese tipo de fondos, espigas de trigo de diferentes colores, hojas largas, cintas, campanillas, etc.
El poema es del libro Versos para Van Gogh (Editorial Sial Pigmalión) y está recitado por Alejandra Moyano.
