Desde mi niñez, la visión de la Tierra dando vueltas continuamente y dejándonos la luz y la oscuridad en los intervalos del día y de la noche, era algo que no entendía y que aún hoy me cuesta entender, porque tengo la duda de si es el tiempo el que pasa o somos nosotros los que pasamos. La infinitud de los días —aunque el Sol sea finito y muera en miles de millones de años— nos sitúa en que el tiempo es algo tan inaccesible para el ser humano, que en la inmensidad del concepto nos perdemos en su comprensión, y en esa gran oscuridad lo que nos interesa del tiempo, individualmente contemplado, es tan solo nuestro tiempo, es decir: el tiempo que a cada uno de nosotros nos toca vivir en este mundo, el tiempo en el que somos personas y podemos disfrutarlo.
Esta afirmación es obvia porque los días y las noches que vienen detrás de cada individuo corresponde a otros, pues ya no estamos aquí para vivirlos. La consecuencia es que debemos ser conscientes de que nuestro tiempo —el de cada cual— debe ser algo muy importante y no debemos perderlo inconscientemente. Sucede que el paso de los días es algo periódico y recurrente que nos sobrepasa, porque en ese continuo viaje parece que los días pasan y todo sigue igual, pero no es así; van sucediendo cosas que nos hacen variar como personas y que tienen influencia en nuestras vidas, entre ellas y como punto principal el que nosotros mismos vamos cambiando, las células de nuestro cuerpo van envejeciendo en ese caminar.
He comentado la importancia de no perder el tiempo inconscientemente porque hay algo que nos amenaza siempre y que nos adormece, incluso nos inmoviliza, impidiendo cambiar aquellos hábitos y costumbres nada útiles o provechosos, buscar nuevos horizontes de vida, mejorar nuestra conciliación familiar, los tiempos de descanso, en definitiva buscar la forma de ser más felices, y si ya lo somos enriquecernos aún más; me estoy refiriendo a la “rutina”, esa costumbre inveterada de hacer las cosas sin pensarlas, cuestión que nos acecha en todos los momentos de nuestra vida y que nos hace perder oportunidades de mejorarla.
Estoy seguro de que todos hemos tenido situaciones de cambio que nos han dinamizado, que nos han hecho estar con los cinco sentidos ocupados en que las cosas salgan bien; me refiero a un cambio de empresa, un nuevo domicilio, un ascenso, el cambio de vida a otra ciudad, nuestra propia boda… múltiples pueden ser las razones que hacen que nuestra atención, durante algunas semanas o meses, esté día a día en continua vigilancia y observación. Sin embargo, pasado ese período, el agua del río desbordado de nuestro interés por algo vuelve a su cauce, y lo que era nuevo y desconocido se vuelve conocido y normal, forma parte de nosotros, o mejor aún, somos parte integrante de aquello que tiempo atrás nos llamó poderosamente la atención. Sin darnos cuenta, entramos en ese camino de la rutina en el que hacemos las cosas por la costumbre, la práctica, la experiencia adquirida o el conocimiento, de forma que somos autómatas de nuestras decisiones y vamos repitiendo las cosas sin pensar en por qué las hacemos así.
Cuando estamos en ese estado de consentimiento y de comodidad del que hablo, podrían pasar meses y años sin que prestemos atención a la posibilidad de cambiarlo, y ello es así porque no nos paramos a pensar si algo podemos hacer para obtener alguna mejora, o para asegurarnos de que las cosas están mejor así que de ninguna otra manera. Recuerdo mis tiempos de gestión empresarial en el que recomendaba a los directivos medio día para pensar. La idea era dedicar una tarde a revisar nuestros hábitos de trabajo diario para confirmar que no hacíamos tareas innecesarias, o para analizar si había funciones asumidas como nuestras cuando correspondían a otros, o si el desarrollo y los programas que habíamos implementado hacía tiempo merecían continuar o cambiarse; lo que quiero decir es que pararse a pensar de vez en cuando en lo que hacemos, en qué invertimos nuestro tiempo, en lo que tenemos delante de los ojos, es una decisión muy recomendable no solo para nuestra vida profesional, sino también para nuestra vida personal, fundamentalmente, porque nos da la oportunidad de decidir si estamos en el buen camino o hay cosas susceptibles de mejorarlas.
En una secuencia lógica, después de pararse a pensar y meditar hay que decidir. La decisión siempre es el paso previo para poner en marcha acciones que cambien el rumbo que llevamos, de forma que nuestro comportamiento se alinee con aquello que queremos conseguir. Cuando conversamos con amigos, compañeros de trabajo y otros, es frecuente oír frases como esta: no tengo tiempo para nada… me falta tiempo… me gustaría tener tiempo para… no tener tiempo me preocupa… me falta tiempo…; este tipo de frases nos da una idea de la importancia que le damos a este agente que nos acompaña siempre —o tal vez somos nosotros los que sin pensar estamos dentro de su secuencia—. Personalmente creo en la capacidad que tenemos de ordenar nuestra vida, nuestro tiempo, de tal forma que seamos capaces de ir dirigiéndola hacia el principal objetivo, que no es otro que ser felices, obviamente, en este propósito influirán las circunstancias de cada cual. Sucede a veces que la alteración imprevista de estas circunstancias es lo que produce el cambio que necesitamos.
Termino contando el cuento de la bicicleta y el coche. Una familia compuesta por los padres, un hijo de doce años y dos perros vivía en un pequeño pueblo de Palencia cercano a la capital. Se dedicaban a la apicultura y con la venta de miel subsistían. Ganaban muy poco, tenían pocos recursos, pero vivían relajados en la rutina de cuidar a las abejas. Su ilusión era comprarse un coche, pero no tenían dinero, llevaban más de veinte años con el negocio de la miel y no habían conseguido los ahorros suficientes. En realidad, ya habían abandonado la idea de tenerlo. Cuando necesitaban ir a la capital iban en bicicleta, el niño la utilizaba todos los días para sus desplazamientos a la escuela. Cuando el tiempo era lluvioso y con viento tenían que soportar sus inclemencias e incomodidades.
Así pasaban los años anclados en sus costumbres, en sus rutinas, pero ansiando el sueño real de tener un coche para su bienestar.
Un mal día, inesperadamente se declaró un incendio en el bosque, los bomberos les obligaron a desalojar la zona y cuando estuvo apagado volvieron de nuevo. El fuego había arrasado las colmenas y el material que necesitaban para su pequeño negocio, todo estaba devastado, menos mal que milagrosamente se salvó la casa y el almacén. El incendio había destruido su confort y les había sacado de su rutinaria vida. Desesperados, con la pequeña indemnización recibida, unos meses después decidieron modificar el negocio de la miel por el de la leche, —hacía años que habían oído que era más lucrativo, pero no se habían decidido a cambiar—. Compraron tres vacas y la pareja comenzó a trabajar con gran dinamismo, estaban eufóricos y contentos procurando día a día que todo les saliera bien, como así fue, tuvieron más rentabilidad, más dinero y más ahorros.
Pasados un par de años ya tenían en los establos diez vacas y al tercer año se compraron el coche; el incendio les sacó de la rutina y de la comodidad, sin embargo, les hizo mejorar la vida.
