Durante varios años se fueron incorporando al grupo otros amigos hasta que alcanzó los dieciséis miembros que ahora tiene y, por complicado que pueda parecer, se fue manteniendo entre todos ellos la unión y la armonía de inicio como atributo principal de su amistad. Se le atribuye a Borges el comentario de que un amigo no es otro yo, porque sería monótono, sino que es alguien con características propias con quien compartimos tiempo y vida, con las naturales confluencias y desacuerdos en todo lo que nos rodea, bien sean cuestiones sociales, religiosas, económicas o culturales. Por esta razón, que un grupo de dieciséis personas sea capaz de mantenerse unido durante más de un cuarto de siglo tiene un gran mérito. Las características que hermanan al Grupo SETEROS son una demostración de la amistad que merece ser recordada como un símbolo muy positivo de las cualidades humanas, siendo por lo tanto la principal motivación que he tenido para escribir un libro.
En realidad, es un homenaje a quienes con su forma de ser y su buena disposición han sido capaces de compartir y disfrutar muchas de las cosas que la vida nos ofrece, en una línea de cordialidad y buena convivencia por encima de las individualidades y egoísmos propios de las personas, que son clásicos problemas que frecuentemente se dan en las sociedades contemporáneas.
La amistad es uno de los sentimientos que más favorecen la felicidad. El afecto personal puro y desinteresado que sentimos y compartimos con otras personas da sentido a la vida, junto a los lazos familiares es uno de los pilares que sostienen la vida emocional de los seres humanos. En dos de sus libros más interesantes, Ética a Nicómaco y Retórica, Aristóteles ya hablaba del valor de la amistad considerándola una virtud necesaria para la vida; en su opinión nadie querría vivir sin amigos aunque tuviera todos los demás bienes terrenales, porque para qué le servirían todas esas riquezas sin tener con quien compartirlas.
La importancia y transcendencia de la auténtica amistad queda fuera de toda duda, con más fuerza en el mundo actual por las tendencias individualistas y personalistas que predominan en las sociedades, especialmente en el llamado mundo occidental, en donde los signos externos del poder, el dinero y la riqueza adquieren mucho valor. La virtud de la que hablaba Aristóteles, en los casos interesados y egoístas, va enmascarada por la deslealtad al buscar su propio beneficio, y ello la deslegitima, el apego y cariño son producto de la necesidad de conseguir algo y en consecuencia la priva de pureza y autenticidad, convirtiéndola en una relación falsa, desleal e hipócrita.
A lo largo de los años, las relaciones de amistad se han tratado con profusión en la literatura y en los medios audiovisuales. Los personajes clásicos cuyas historias han demostrado el valor de este sentimiento humano han sido presentados como una muestra del interés que despiertan a los demás, tanto para el aprendizaje y la demostración de lo que es compañerismo, hermandad, cariño, lealtad, etcétera, como por ser un lazo de gran fuerza que une a los protagonistas.
Son muchas las historias que identifican la amistad sincera como el sentimiento más puro y deseable que pueden vivir las personas, sirva como ejemplo la obra de Dumas Los tres mosqueteros; en ella el joven gascón D’Artagnan marcha a París para convertirse en mosquetero, se une bajo un fuerte sentimiento de amistad con tres de ellos y juntos tienen toda clase de aventuras en contra del Cardenal Richelieu. La obra escrita en 1844 ha ido al cine, la televisión y al cómic en diferentes versiones, todas ellas expresando los ideales y valores de la amistad y la lealtad en su conocida frase: “Uno para todos y todos para uno”. Otra obra que deja presente este sentimiento a lo largo del desarrollo de toda la novela es Don Quijote de la Mancha. En este caso Cervantes coloca el pilar de la amistad entre dos personajes opuestos en personalidad y en singularidades, se trata de un caballero trastocado en su juicio y un sirviente analfabeto cargado de sentido común. Pese a las diferencias, sin embargo, el compañerismo, la solidaridad, la lealtad y en definitiva la amistad, fluye y se desarrolla entre los dos de forma natural y desinteresada.
Naturalmente que el valor que tiene la relación de amistad incluye también aspectos interesantes que incitan al debate y que merecerían un extenso comentario. Es obvio que en los tiempos de actividades compartidas pueden surgir dificultades, opiniones diversas, choques de ideas, y un largo etcétera de cuestiones que ponen a prueba la relación; ahora bien, cuando hay interés en no perder la amistad y el vínculo es fuerte y cimentado en el afecto y cuidado mutuo, afecto que se va reforzando con el tiempo, estas discrepancias se diluyen sin otras consecuencias y se llega al acuerdo o a la cesión como mal menor, sin que se produzcan enfrentamientos que hagan peligrar el vínculo amistoso. En cuanto a la consideración de la palabra amistad y a la utilización generosa que hacemos de ella hoy en día, llamando amigos a todos los que están en nuestro ámbito de relación, conviene decir, sobre todo a aquellos que presumen de tener amigos por todas partes, que es en las situaciones complejas y de necesidad cuando se llega a la convicción de quienes son los verdaderos amigos. En uno de los cuentos de El Conde Lucanor, este le preguntó a su consejero cómo podía probar la lealtad de sus amigos, y Patronio, antes de contarle una historia que demostraría cómo hacerlo, le respondió: “el buen amigo es lo mejor del mundo, pero podéis estar persuadido de que cuando llega un momento de necesidad se hallan siempre menos amigos de lo que uno piensa.”
En el Grupo SETEROS, del que formo parte, la persona que con frecuencia me hablaba de la necesidad de escribir sobre los valores y los vínculos de este grupo fue Toni. Desde hace tiempo estaba convencido de hacerlo, aunque desarrollé la idea durante la pandemia del año 2020; mi intención fue dejar constancia de quienes eran y cómo consiguieron mantenerse unidos durante años, sin fisuras y sin abandonos, dejando constancia de que es posible la amistad por encima de las cuestiones propias que nos diferencian, me refiero a las ideas, las afiliaciones, la política, los credos, y sobre todo el respeto al criterio de los demás en aquellos temas en que hay discrepancia.
He querido hacer un relato novelado en el que, al mismo tiempo que contaba quiénes eran los SETEROS, también pudiera recordar al público en general algunos episodios de la historia de España que por su interés debieran rememorarse siempre.
La historia de los países, de lo que fueron y de lo que ahora son, es el resultado del conjunto de las decisiones que sus gobernantes tomaron en el pasado con sus aciertos y errores; algunas de estas determinaciones cambiaron el curso de los acontecimientos y pusieron al país en un camino que podría ser otro distinto si se hubieran tomado otras decisiones. No se trata de saber qué hubiera sido lo mejor, sino de constatar la importancia de los hechos en sí que cambiaron el rumbo de la historia. Tomo por ejemplo la batalla de las Navas de Tolosa, en el año 1212; en ella la cristiandad y la Reconquista española se jugaban el destino de quién sería el futuro dueño de la península ibérica, en una pugna de siglos entre cristianos y musulmanes y con las repercusiones europeas consiguientes para su futuro.
Otro ejemplo importante también sería la pelea que sostuvieron Pedro I de Castilla con su hermanastro Enrique de Trastámara, que terminó con la victoria de Enrique, —según la leyenda ayudado por un francés— cambiando la historia de España durante más de doscientos años al entrar en el gobierno la casa de Trastámara, que desplazó a las familias que la habían gobernado hasta la fecha. Nadie sabe lo que hubiera sido de este país de haber seguido gobernando los herederos de Pedro I de Castilla.
Este tipo de historias son las que se desarrollan en esta novela quizás atípica, porque en la trama principal de los dos protagonistas, un octogenario monje trapense y un profesor malagueño en la década de los cuarenta que comparten el Camino de Santiago, van apareciendo otros relatos encadenados con el principal, por un lado la verdadera historia de los SETEROS, y por otro los relatos históricos asignados a cada uno de los miembros del grupo.
En la novela se da la mezcla del pasado, con el presente y el futuro, pues su acción está situada en el año 2048, cuando por edad biológica los miembros del grupo estén todos pasando la década de los noventa. Por otra parte, asociados a estos relatos históricos e imbricados en ellos está la ficción con unos cuentos referidos a cuestiones de la naturaleza humana, como por ejemplo, la venganza, la envidia, la incultura, la fobia, la codicia, el sexo, la constancia, el esfuerzo, la suerte, el azar, el miedo, la investigación, y otros muchos temas que no relaciono en aras de la brevedad.
El sistema que he empleado es el clásico recurso narrativo que se conoce como “caja china”, técnica tan antigua como la literatura oral que ya lo empleaba. Se trata de que en una historia principal surgen ramificaciones de las que se desprenden otras historias —que son distintas de la primera—, y así sucesivamente a criterio del autor. Este procedimiento narrativo, que personalmente me gusta por su abierta posibilidad de dar mayor consistencia a la trama principal, dan a la novela mayor riqueza y misterio al jugar con realidades alternativas, obviamente todas ellas enlazadas por sus vínculos argumentales. Este recurso narrativo lo han utilizado muchos escritores, como el inglés William Faulker y el argentino José Luis Borges. También Vargas Llosa ha hablado de esta fórmula narrativa como una técnica antigua, pero a su vez moderna en cuanto a la utilización actual que muchos escritores hacen de ella. El ejemplo más clásico y conocido tal vez sea Las mil y una noches, en la que la protagonista Scheherazade para salvar su vida, va enlazando una historia con otra todas las noches dejando al sultán con la intriga día tras día. Cervantes en el celebérrimo Don Quijote de la Mancha lo utiliza con profusión; Michael Ende, en su famoso libro La historia interminable es un palmario ejemplo de las cajas chinas.
Resulta admirable que un grupo de dieciséis personas, por encima de toda ideología y pensamiento, permanezcan unidas durante años a través del vínculo de la amistad. Las consideraciones que pueden derivarse de este hecho podrían ser muy variadas, pero de lo que no cabe duda es que la tolerancia y el respeto que todos tienen entre sí son los principales agentes para conseguir este resultado. Los seres humanos somos los únicos animales que peleamos por cosas distintas de la comida, el sexo o el territorio, muchas de las cosas que nos rodean son objeto del deseo y ello hace difícil la convivencia; además, la divisiones sociales y políticas en las que vivimos son también un impedimento para la concordia, razones en su conjunto muy poderosas para que en esta carrera de obstáculos la gente se lleve bien.
Por último, me falta señalar a nuestras mujeres, las que comparten con nosotros aventuras y desventuras en el día a día de nuestra vidas, porque ellas son el sostén y el apoyo necesario para que este ambiente, puro y sano en el que vivimos la amistad en el Grupo SETEROS, haya podido nacer, crecer y desarrollarse por encima de todas las cosas.
